National Flower of Singapore

The National flower of Singapore is, Vanda Miss Joaquim var. Agnes, a rosy-violet orchid hybrid between the Burmese Vanda teres and the Malayan Vanda hookeriana. The flower was bred and named after Agnes Joaquim, a horticulturalist. In April 1981, it was selected as the national flower of Singapore from amongst forty contenders. Tourists can find the flower at the National Orchid Garden, Singapore Botanic Gardens. Hardy and free-flowering, Vanda Miss Joaquim has also become a highly popular and prolific hybrid in other countries such as the Philippines and Hawaii.
