Singapore hawker centres - where the true spirit of Singapore lies and of course the best places to experiment with local cuisine! Here you'll find the most sought after local dishes at the most affordable prices. Forget about getting the much desired air-conditioner in Sunny Singapore and the cleanest cutlery, tables and seats, because the best local cuisines are found here - hokkien mee, rojak, grilled stingray, satay beehoon, loh mee, bak cho mee, chicken rice, beef noodle, duck rice, roti prata, cha kwa tiao, claypot rice, nasi lemak, curry puffs, etc, you name it. Long queues perhaps are not always the best way to judge the taste of the food. Consider looking out for those news media clippings pasted outside the stalls that show pictures of celebrities patronising the stalls. They will lend you some clue if the food is scrumptious enough to be featured by the various local TV Food programmes. And foreigners, if the concern of not being able to communicate with the hawkers is what has been hindering you from visiting them, you would be surprised that many of them actually can manage simple English. Furthermore, most of them would naturally be more hospitable towards foreigners.
